abstract Cork oak (Quercus suber L.) is an important tree of some Mediterranean forests, with great economic value due to the production of cork. Somatic embryogenesis induction and plant regeneration have been reported in this species from explants of both adult and juvenile origin. However, the quality of the embryos is somewhat poor, which may be related with a deficient accumulation of storage compounds in the developing somatic embryos. To better understand the somatic embryogenic process in this species, a set of assays has been carried out to analyze the levels of starch, lipids and proteins in somatic embryos, at different developmental phases.
