Present Research Interests

Aquaculture and fish metabolism:
- understanding of the intermediary metabolism of saltwater carnivorous fish important to Southern European aquaculture, such as gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), meagre (Argyrosomus regius) and Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). My main focus is on carbohydrate metabolism (whole-body glucose metabolism) with special interest on sources of blood glucose and liver glycogen. More recently, my aim has been integrating carbohydrate metabolism with lipid synthesis, particularly to provide reliable lipid profile and de novo lipogenesis rates.

Tracer studies in fish:
- Keeping up with novel aquaculture feeds  and developing experimental approaches to address the nutritional, enzymatic and hormonal regulation of intermediary metabolism using stable isotopes such as 2H and 13C and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR).
