In Portugal, African plant collections are deposited in four herbaria: COI (Universidade de Coimbra), LISC (Instituto de Investigação Científica Tropical, Lisboa), LISU (Jardim Botânico, Museu Nacional de História Natural, Lisboa) and PO (Universidade do Porto).
As part of the African Plants Initiative (API), the two herbaria in Lisbon worked in collaboration to digitise their types of African plant names. The specimens were digitised using two Scanners Epson Expression 10000XL installed on Herbscan platforms. Images were produced at 600 ppi and saved in tiff format. Additional images were made for the contents of capsules, hidden labels and reverse of labels, with special attention paid to capsule content to ensure that all major details were captured. The specimen data were databased using BRAHMS. A total of 2964 types were digitised at LISC and 1500 at LISU.
