Plants of Angola/Plantas de Angola, was initiated in October 2006. Its main objective was producing a compilation of plant names with associated specimen data and synonymy. This has already been made available as a SANBI publication. In addition a website was created that reflects the information in the book . It is expected that it will be updated with contributions from the scientific community. This website will be a primary source of information on the flora of Angola for scientists and others such as conservationists, students, educators and general public, and one of the biodiversity building blocks required for informed environmental decision-making.
The project has counted with the collaboration of 32 botanists from several institutions in South Africa, Angola, the UK, Spain, the USA, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal, and is coordinated at the National Herbarium in Pretoria. In spite of its richness and uniqueness, the flora of Angola presents a serious gap in the knowledge of the Southern African plant diversity. It is expected that this gap will be filled by the joint effort of the international botanical community.
