Police institutions have crossed several political regimes and have been present in all historical periods, actively intervening in moments of greater tension, social conflict, and social peace. Studying the Police (s), therefore, means studying not only the way in which the State and political regimes dealt with these forces but also their permanent connection with the various areas and sectors of society.

The political changes observed throughout history have always had (more or less direct) repercussions on police institutions. As such, efforts to adapt and restructure police forces to different emerging socio-political contexts are evident, highlighting the need for reform and reorganization, in addition to concerns about the image and public perception of these forces.

Starting from a historical perspective but seeking a collaborative, interdisciplinary and international approach, the International Congress “Police(s) and Regimes” aims to promote reflection and debate about the evolution of police institutions throughout history and their connection with different political regimes and society in general. Therefore, participation is invited by submitting proposals within the following thematic axes (without prejudice to proposals for communications dedicated to other themes being accepted):

– The organization of police forces throughout history;
– Police(s) and different political regimes;
– Police(s) and power bodies;
– Forms and methods of action of the Police (s);
– Transformations in police bodies;
– Police(s) and Revolutions;
– Representations and narratives about police action;
– Sources for the history of the Police (s);
– Police files and archives for the history of the Police (s).
