The First International Congress on the History of Dioceses aims to benefit from the ongoing historiographical renewal. Its primary objective is to present a state-of-the-art study of dioceses in their relationship with territory and communities, demonstrating the transformation of this notion over time. A second phase will focus this reflection primarily on the contemporary period (20th and 21st centuries). This meeting also aims to deepen knowledge and historiographical reflection on the history of dioceses, seeking to establish a debate and exchange on the methodologies to be followed in this type of study, as well as to learn about ongoing or recently completed projects on the history of dioceses in Portugal. From a comparative perspective, the aim is to compare the study of these processes with other geographies, particularly European countries that shared similar historical paths and cultural traits, such as Spain, Italy, and France.
This Congress, organized by the History of Territories and Communities hub (CEF NOVA FCSH) and the Center for Religious History Studies (UCP) , will take place on the Lisbon campus of the Catholic University of Portugal and will feature the participation of Portuguese and foreign researchers.
In a dynamic of broadening the debate and issues, historians, professors, researchers and other scholars are invited to submit papers on the following topics:
- Processes for establishing or extinguishing dioceses in Portugal or elsewhere
- Protagonists/Protagonisms in the constitution and restoration of dioceses
- Conflict and dispute over ecclesiastical territories
- Church and social dynamics
- Archives and other sources for the history of dioceses
- Clergy profile and mobility
- Chapters and Ecclesiastical Chambers
- Dioceses and secularization
