In 2009, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 22nd Earth Day, calling for the promotion of environmental conservation and the strike of a fair balance between the economic, social, and environmental needs of present and future generations.

Earth Day is an opportunity to reflect on the beauty and fragility of our Earth and on the mission that each of us has to play in protecting and conserving our planet for future generations, fulfilling our commitment as guardians and caregivers of a more sustainable future.

On this Earth Day, we evoke Biosphere Reserves, recognizing them as a compliment and reaffirmation of the commitment shared by a diverse range of territories that have chosen to prioritize respect for nature and the well-being of all life.

The 12 Biosphere Reserves that make up the Portuguese network represent 12% of the national territory and correspond to 28% of the number of Protected and Classified Areas in our country. They concentrate a significant part of the national cultural and natural heritage, comprising 79 (79.8%) of the 99 mandatory conservation habitats.
