Maria do Céu Madureira, researcher at the Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE) of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), collaborated on the “Red Book of Endemic Species of São Tomé and Príncipe”, the result of the project “Characterization of the threatened flora of São Tomé & Príncipe - Projecto Flora Ameaçada”, financed by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF).

This pioneering work provides the first overview of the conservation status of 106 (sub)endemic plant species, assessed according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria.

«The book shows that two species are already extinct, while twelve are critically endangered, 53 are endangered, and 25 are considered vulnerable. The publication highlights the urgency of conservation action, when the islands' biodiversity faces increasing threats, such as agricultural expansion, deforestation and invasive species», reveals Maria do Céu Madureira.

According to the FCTUC specialist, the rediscovery of rare species such as Balthasaria mannii and Psychotria exellii, not seen for more than half a century, as well as the identification of at least 17 species new to science, including a new dominant species of Cleistanthus in the dry forests of northern São Tomé, are among the most striking discoveries.

The book, illustrated with graphs and distribution maps, also highlights the archipelago's ecosystems, presents the methodologies used and proposes guidelines for conservation. It identifies 21 areas of high importance for the preservation of flora, many of which are outside the current Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA’s) network. In addition, ex-situ conservation actions were carried out, with the planting of endangered specimens in local nurseries, in the Bom Sucesso Botanical Garden and degraded forest areas.

«This publication highlights the importance of strengthening local scientific knowledge and the training of São Tomé technicians and botanists, recognizing the endemic flora as a natural heritage of incalculable value for the resilience of ecosystems in the face of climate change», concludes Maria do Céu Madureira.

The “Red Book of Endemic Species of São Tomé and Príncipe” represents a vital scientific tool to guide political, educational and conservation decisions, being aimed at government authorities, local communities, the private sector and conservation professionals.
