Vassilis is currently working as a Fisheries Data Analyst at DataFish Technology Solutions, where he contributes to fisheries data analysis and modern monitoring solutions. In September 2024, he started an industry-focused PhD in Marine Ecology, linked with DataFish, at the Department of Life Sciences of University of Coimbra, within the EU Horizon project REDUCE. He is also a PhD researcher at Centre for Functional Ecology (CFE).
Previously, he worked as a Fisheries Biologist and Fisheries Monitoring Officer at University of Patras (Greece) under national scientific programs, and as Project Manager at iSea (Greece), participating in national and international marine conservation projects and initiatives.
His research focuses on fisheries technology, bycatch monitoring, and the ecology of elasmobranchs and other Endangered, Threatened and Protected (ETP) species. More recently, he has specialized in computer vision, machine learning, and AI-assisted image analysis, particularly for modern fisheries monitoring technologies, such as Electronic Monitoring Systems (EMS), with the aim of improving fisheries compliance and marine biodiversity monitoring.
He works with tools such as R, Python, and GIS software (QGIS), as well as image annotation platforms including Label Studio and CVAT, to support dataset preparation, image annotation, data visualization, fisheries monitoring analyses, spatial assessment, and machine learning workflows.
