NutriBiome is a cutting-edge research laboratory dedicated to investigating the complex relationships between food, diet, microbiomes, in particular gut microbiota and human health. The lab’s work focuses on understanding how different foods and dietary patterns influence gut microbiota and, in turn, how these microbiomes impact overall health and disease prevention. Additionally, the lab also is involved in new food product development to improve health. |
Research areas
1. Gut Microbiota Composition and Function:
Objective: Analyze the composition of gut microbiota and its functional roles in human physiology.
Approach: Long-read Next generation sequencing and bioinformatics to profile microbial communities and identify key microbial species and their metabolic pathways.
2. Dietary Interventions and Microbiome Modulation:
Objective: Explore how various diets, such as plant-based, ketogenic, or high-fiber diets, influence gut microbiota composition.
Approach: Volunteers are given of specific foods to introduce in their diet, followed before and after the study to verify the real health impacts. Specific dietary components, like prebiotics, probiotics, and polyphenols, can selectively modulate gut microbiota, promoting beneficial health impacts.
3. Microbiota and Health Outcomes:
Objective: Investigate the links between gut microbiota and health outcomes, such as immune function, metabolic health, and neurological well-being.
Highlights: Emerging evidence suggests that gut microbiota plays a critical role in conditions like obesity, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and even mental health disorders like depression and anxiety.
4. Innovative Food Products:
“Play” with food: New trendy food products are explored to bring new ways for healthy food to be more attractive to consumers.
Personalized-diet specific food: key components in food to improve health of niche consumers.
NutriBiome collaborates with national and international academic institutions, healthcare providers, and food industry partners to translate research findings into practical applications, including the development of functional foods and personalized nutrition strategies.

Research areas
- One Health Initiative: Recognizing that human health is directly and profoundly affected by all components of our environment— including animals, plants, microbes, and water—NutriBiome is committed to the One Health Initiative. The lab investigates the impacts of food on human health, both positive and negative, and uses these insights to make recommendations for producing safer, healthier, and more sustainable food. This holistic approach underscores the interconnectedness of environmental and human health, aiming to promote well-being from “Farm to Fork”.
- Personalized Nutrition: NutriBiome is moving towards personalized nutrition approaches, where dietary recommendations are tailored based on an individual's gut microbiota profile.
- Microbiome-Based Therapeutics: The lab is exploring the potential of microbiome-based therapies, such as fecal microbiota transplantation and microbiome-derived compounds, to treat or prevent diseases.
