The Life Sciences Department of the University of Coimbra hosts from the 28-30 of May the annual meeting of the Working Group on Risk Assessment of Environmental Interactions of Aquaculture of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES – WGREIA).

After meeting in Copenhagen in 2023, this group of specialists seeks a better understanding of the interactions between aquaculture and the environment and the resulting effects. These meetings aim to develop science-based tools, risk/benefit assessment methods, and models to support informed sustainable development and management in this industry, an essential approach to mitigating risk and optimising ecosystem benefits for the industry and society.

The researcher of the Centre for Functional Ecology and member of ICES, Ivan Viegas, organizes and coordinates this event that brings scientists from Norway, Canada, the United Kingdom and Ireland to Coimbra, as well as the general secretary of the Portuguese Association of Aquaculture, Isidro Blanquet.
