The 3rd of November is the International Day for Biosphere Reserves, having been celebrated for the first time in 2022. Biosphere Reserves are important natural and cultural territories committed to safeguarding heritage and the well-being and progress of the local communities. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves was created in 1976 as a backbone for biodiversity conservation, ecosystems restoration and life in harmony with nature. Today, there are 748 territories/Biosphere Reserves in 134 countries, 12 being in Portugal, three of which are cross-border. The network is fundamental in facilitating cooperation, fomenting knowledge interchange and promoting experiences, training and good practices sharing.

In a time when we are debating with increasing concern the accelerated dilapidation of resources and the transgression of planetary borders, it is vital to rediscover our connection with nature and commit to the construction of a sustainable society. To do this, it is imperative to develop solutions based on nature, preserve the integrity of hydric resources and climatic conditions, and safeguard marine and terrestrial ecosystems. It is our collective responsibility to protect the natural world and secure the future; UNESCO’s Biosphere Reserves constitute a singular and admirable contribution to a development and prosperity trajectory that respects planetary equilibrium.
