International Mountain Day
Today, the Portuguese Biosphere Reserves project joined the World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves.
Established by the United Nations in 2004, International Mountain Day aims to raise awareness of the importance of mountains in maintaining the planet’s balance and to promote the sustainable development of these territories.
This year’s theme – “Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation and youth” – highlights the need for innovation and adaptation in these territories, with a special focus on the role of young people in building a more sustainable future.
Mountains are essential for ecosystems, acting as guardians of biodiversity and providers of vital resources for humanity. They also hold valuable cultural heritage, comprising monuments and traditions developed and preserved by the communities that have settled in these regions. Innovation — such as digital technologies, climate-adapted agriculture and new approaches to resource management — is crucial for mountain communities to address complex challenges like climate change, poverty, and biodiversity conservation.
On this International Mountain Day, we emphasize the contribution of the World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves and the Portuguese Biosphere Reserves within it as examples of commitment to sustainability and the conservation of mountain territories. On this symbolic date, we celebrate the Portuguese Biosphere Reserves project joining the World Network of Mountain Biosphere Reserves!
