Laboratório de Micologia e Biodeterioração

The MycoBiodet Lab is part of the Centre for Functional Ecology - Science for People & the Planet and the Associate Laboratory TERRA, being allied with the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra. The Lab main areas of research concern the study of historical cultural heritage monuments biodeterioration (with a particular emphasis on stone relics) and Fungal systematics, molecular biology, phylogenetics and -omics. During the last years the Lab has also strongly focused on photoautotrophic, fungal and prokaryotic diversity and systematics in extreme environments.

Áreas científicas

The MycoBiodet main scientific areas are related to:

  • General mycology
  • Microbial systematics
  • Biodiversity characterization using classical morphological and modern molecular biology techniques
  • Genomic analysis and materials biodeterioration characterization

We aim to dwell deeper in the microbial deterioration mechanisms involved in stone biodeterioration and expand the knowledge on fungal systematics in underexplored and extreme environments. Moreover, taking into account the recent advances in microbial molecular biology, the Lab also has a keen interest in Next-generation-sequencing methods and bioinformatics.
